Broken Wing, Falling Sky

Written by  Fran Muir

In Broken Wing, Falling Sky, Fran Muir gives us a moving memoir of her mother and a portrait of a complicated mother-daughter relationship in which much was left unspoken. After undergoing a general anaesthetic for a mastectomy, Fran's mother, Jean, develops problems with short-term memory, and her world changes. Using fragments of family history, journals, and her mother's medical and other records, Muir weaves a lyrical tapestry of her mother's life and death along with her own struggle to make sense of the health care system. This a powerful story of an encounter with medical bureaucracy as well as a portrait of building family connections while letting go.

Additional Info

In Broken Wing, Falling Sky, Muir, who lives in Vancouver, delineates her mother's failing with compassion and disbelief. As she rails against an indifferent medical bureaucracy, Muir reconnects with the mother who once told her as a child that "she was not enough to stay home for."
 - More Magazine

"Fran Muir's memoir of her late mother and their struggles with the B.C. health-care system, is harrowing. It's also an act of love and touching reminiscence."
- Uptown Magazine

"Our hearts go out to Muir...(she documents) her mother's life and distressing decline in a thoughtful, probing way."
